The purpose of this study was to examine the defensibility of the fifteen English items of the High School National Exam (ENEM) between the years of 2013 and 2015, which includes an analysis of their content and the problematization of the current framework of the Exam. The issues raised by Tumolo and Tomich (2003) about the idea of defensible and non-defensible items guided the overall purpose of this study, taking into consideration its main objective: to analyze the construct validity of the English items of ENEM applied in the 2013-2015 editions. Authors such as Alderson (2000), Brown (2003) and Weir (2005), as well as previous studies on foreign language assessment constitute the theoretical basis of this research concerning the reading construct of the English language items of ENEM. Document analysis was used to examine the framework of the Exam, whereas the sociocognitive structure by Weir (2005) inspired the content validation of the items. This content validation evidenced the validity of the reading construct of the items, which is based on the exam current framework, the official documents used to formulate this framework and the variables exposed throughout the Theoretical Foundation of this study. The process of validation, related to the analysis of the skills of this framework, which guides the elaboration of the English items of ENEM, was validated by two assessment experts with deep knowledge regarding the framework. The analyses indicated that among the fifteen items analyzed, fourteen had their content validated and only one did not correspond to one of the analysis demands. Regarding the framework analysis, four items did not match the microdata provided by INEP. As a conclusion, suggestions are presented for improvements in this construct through the creation of descriptors with the aim of guiding future elaboration of the English items of ENEM.Documento textualporAcesso abertoAvaliação da EducaçãoAvaliação da Educação BásicaExame Nacional do Ensino Médio (ENEM)A validade de construto das questões de língua inglesa do ENEM: um olhar para o conteúdo e a matriz de referênciaDissertação120801
